Yanomami health workers have written to the Ministers of Justice and Environment demanding immediate measures to expel invading goldminers from their land.
In the letter they warn that mining will bring 'social chaos' and massive health problems. They accuse the authorities of ignoring serious problems, and warn that they face a situation similar to the invasion of the 1980s, when the Yanomami population plummeted by one fifth as hundreds died from diseases transmitted by the goldminers.
