"They beat me, pounded up chilli pepper and rubbed it over my body"
The Baka tribe in the Congo Basin are accused of poaching when they hunt to feed their families. They face arrest and beatings, torture and death at the hands of anti-poaching squads funded by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
When Survival met this survivor, Atowe, in Cameroon in 2018, he described the abuse that one of these squads inflicted on him the previous year.
Note: Atowe uses the Baka word "WW" which refers both to WWF and to the wildlife guards they fund and equip.
