1:53 Yekwana Indigenous people against mining in Venezuela
Ye’kwana Indigenous people denounce violence and illegal mining on their territory.
The Ye’kwana People of the Tencua community in the Venezuelan Amazon have issued a statement to the Venezuelan government about the violence that’s plaguing their territory because of illegal mining.
On January 20 2025, the Ye’kwana and other Indigenous organizations expelled illegal miners from their territory, destroying the machines used to plunder their forest.
But the response of the miners was brutal: in retaliation, they burned down several houses in the community of Puerto Unión and the clashes left people injured, including a pregnant woman.
⚠️ The Ye’kwana need the government to act NOW. Their territory is being destroyed by illegal mining and their lives are in danger. The government cannot continue to ignore this crisis.
